Bronx Employment Discrimination Attorneys

Fighting For Employment Discrimination Victims in New York

The Bronx employment discrimination attorneys of Phillips & Associates, PLLC, are dedicated to providing the highest quality representation to victims of employment discrimination.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and New York State laws protect individuals from all different types of workplace discrimination, including sexual harassment, sex/gender discrimination, and retaliation for complaints of discrimination/harassment. Policies and practices in the workplace should be neutral with regard to race, religion, and national origin. Like gender, these are protected characteristics that cannot form the basis of adverse employment decisions.

All employees must be treated equally in matters of hiring, firing, compensation, layoffs, promotions, job training, working conditions, benefits, and other privileges. This means employers cannot refuse to hire or promote you just because you are pregnant, or deny you leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act

We handle cases in the Bronx and the New York City area. Call today and speak to our workplace discrimination attorney in the Bronx at (866) 229-9441.

History of the Bronx

The Bronx was home to the Siwanoy and Lenape Indians before Dutch settlers took over in 1639. Jonas Bronck, a Swedish sea captain from the Netherlands, settled on the mainland with a small group of Dutch, German, and Danish servants. The Indians left the area soon after 1700, giving way to the English and the first black inhabitants. The 1800s brought Irish and German emigrants who abandoned severe famines and failed revolutions to pursue the American Dream. Home of the New York Yankees, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle, the Bronx offers tourists and residents a magic slice of American pie. After the Second World War, the Bronx offered rent control apartments and public housing to tenants displaced by Manhattan’s slum clearing. The borough’s preservation of affordable housing and attractive rents has drawn 1.4 million residents. The diverse population of blacks, Latin Americans, and Asians has grown to include Koreans, Vietnamese, Indians, Pakistanis, Cubans, Jamaicans, Russians, and Albanians. The Bronx was awarded the designation of “All-American City” in 1997.

Common Signs of Workplace Discrimination

Many employees are not sure whether what they are seeing at work rises to the level of unlawful discrimination, especially in busy workplaces in the Bronx, where policies and schedules can change quickly. You may notice that certain groups of coworkers are consistently passed over for promotions, disciplined more harshly, or given the least desirable shifts or assignments, even when their performance is strong. You might also see offensive comments, jokes, or messages about race, gender, religion, national origin, pregnancy, disability, or age that are ignored by supervisors, or learn that complaints to human resources have been brushed aside without real investigation. A workplace discrimination lawyer Bronx employees can contact to help you sort through these patterns, compare your treatment to coworkers, and determine whether the behavior you are experiencing is part of a broader discriminatory practice.
In some Bronx workplaces, discrimination shows up in pay practices, such as when employees doing substantially similar work are paid less because of their gender, race, or another protected characteristic, or are denied bonuses and overtime opportunities that others receive. In other situations, workers who speak up about discrimination or harassment may suddenly face schedule changes that conflict with childcare, transfers to distant locations, or write-ups for minor issues, which can be signs of retaliation. By documenting what you see, keeping copies of schedules, evaluations, and emails, and speaking with an attorney familiar with how cases proceed in New York City agencies and courts, you can better protect your rights and make informed decisions about your next steps.

How We Can Help

Phillips & Associates exclusively practices employment discrimination law. It has established a reputation as one of New York’s top workplace discrimination law firms. Sexual harassment and discrimination are illegal and can lead to a hostile work environment. We have helped clients in the Bronx and New York recover damages for unfair or inappropriate treatment at work. We understand it is frightening to complain about discrimination when you think your job is on the line. Victims often ask, “Who else would hire someone of my age or with my disability?” But laws such as the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibit age and disability discrimination and provide for legal recourse against employers who violate these rules. Our experienced Bronx employment discrimination lawyers can explain your legal options and help you file a complaint with the EEOC or Division of Human Rights, government bodies responsible for enforcing antidiscrimination laws. We have successfully handled cases, recovering substantial compensation for our clients through settlement, mediation, or trial. Our consultation is free, and there is no fee unless we recover. Call and speak with our employment discrimination attorneys at (866) 229-9441.
