History of Staten Island

Staten Island was first sighted by explorer Giovanni Verrazano in 1524. The Hackensack and Raritan Indian tribes were Staten Island’s sole inhabitants until the Dutch established settlements in 1630. Known as the “stepchild” of its larger siblings, Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs. Its 400,000 inhabitants have plenty of room to roam the vast parks and beaches for which the island is known. Just a boat ride away from Manhattan, Staten Island remains a retreat from the crowded city streets, offering tourists and residents a slower pace of living. Overall, it is the most suburban of the five boroughs, with an impressive spread of Victorian homes and residential neighborhoods. Although some inhabitants complain of feeling “neglected” by the city government, most residents are content to live in the “forgotten borough” with its emphasis on family values and open space. Staten Island remains a place where generations come to make a good life for their families.

Phillips & Associates Represents Victims of Discrimination

At Phillips & Associates, we understand how difficult it is to report abuse, especially sexual harassment by a supervisor. But we also believe no one should have to tolerate unwelcome advances or discrimination in a hostile work environment. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and New York laws strictly prohibit the disparate treatment of workers based on protected characteristics such as race, religion, national origin, and gender. These are expansive rights that bar sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination based on pregnancy, family responsibility, and sexual orientation. Our Staten Island employment discrimination attorneys will fight for your rights in the workplace.
